Since I am a classical guitarist who performs frequently, having my teeth look the best they can is very important to me. It took me many years and a lot of trips to the orthodontist to get my teeth as straight as they are now. To keep them straight, I still wear my retainer every other night.
Another aspect of my smile that I like to keep up with is whitening my teeth. I have tried different brands of whitening strips over the years such as Crest and Aquafresh. They would each work in their own way but I always had problems with tooth sensitivity and having them fit my teeth properly.
A new brand of teeth whitening that I recently used and absolutely love is Smile Brilliant. This teeth whitener is unlike any I have used before, which is a good thing! This teeth whitening system is customized to you and your teeth so you get amazing results.
Once you order your Smile Brilliant kit, you are sent: two plastic trays, impression putty, teeth whitening gel, desensitizing gel, a prepaid package to mail back, and instructions.
In order to get your whitening process started, you need to make impressions of your teeth so Smile Brilliant can send you a custom whitening tray that fits your teeth perfectly! Making your own impressions can sound intimidating, but I can say from experience that it is not difficult at all!
Before you start your impressions you MUST read the instructions on how to do them! This is VERY important! I read them a few times before starting my impressions. You are sent an extra pack of impression putty in case you make a mistake, but if you read the instructions carefully, they will turn out great! I was able to take my impressions without having to redo them.
After taking your impressions, letting them completely dry, and filling out the consent card, you are ready to mail your impressions and consent card back in the prepaid envelope. You have to fill out and mail the consent card as well in order for the lab to make your impressions. I waited at least a full day to mail my impressions back because I wanted to make sure they were completely dry.
Once my impressions were made and mailed back to me, which did not take long at all, I was ready to whiten my teeth. You want to make sure you read the whitening gel and desensitizing gel instructions prior to whitening your teeth.
It is best to whiten your teeth at night for a few reasons. First, you have to whiten them for at least 45 minutes, which is easier to do at night without having to worry about the rest of the day ahead. Second, after whitening, you have to use desensitizing gel for 15-20 minutes to help reduce sensitivity and prevent future staining. After doing this you do not want to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes. All of this is better to do before you go to bed so you do not re-stain your teeth.
This may sound like a lot to do and remember, but trust me once you do it and get into a routine, it is easy!
After you have read the instructions for whitening, make sure to brush your teeth with just WATER, no toothpaste, and clean and dry your trays. Next, you are going to apply the whitening gel to your trays. You do not need to apply a lot for good results.
I would leave my whitening trays in for 45 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on sensitivity. After you are done whitening your teeth, you want to brush your teeth with toothpaste and clean and dry your trays with cold water. Now you are ready to use the desensitizing gel.
I would keep the desensitizing gel in for 20 minutes. After using it you want to spit out any remaining gel but make sure you do NOT rinse your mouth. Remember, do not eat or drink for a minimum of 30 minutes after whitening. Once you are all done, clean and dry your whitening trays.
I would whiten my teeth at night so I made sure to have dinner and take any vitamins before whitening. In between whitening and using the desensitizing gel, I would brush and floss my teeth. This way once you are totally done with whitening for the night, you have already brushed your teeth before going to sleep.
Sleeping after whitening really helps the gels to work on your teeth without food or drink interfering. You can basically do anything around your house while whitening your teeth, such as: cleaning up after dinner, general cleaning, watching tv, getting ready for the next day, reading a book, listening to music, laundry, etc.
I noticed whitening results after using Smile Brilliant for a few days! I continued to whiten though for 10 days. Make sure to be consistent with your whitening. You want to whiten every day or every other day to see results. You cannot do this once or twice a month and expect to see results.
